According to the Chongqing Earthquake Agency, the project of the quick report and early warning on earthquake intensity is expected to wrap up in 2022. At that time, the functions of citywide (including towns and townships within the city) quick report and earthquake warning will be realized to improve the accuracy and speed of reporting on earthquake parameters.

The project of the quick report and early warning on earthquake intensity of Chongqing is expected to be finished in 2022

This project was launched in 2018 and funded by the central government and Chongqing Municipal People’s Government. It aims to build a station network (including reference stations, basic stations and general stations for earthquake monitoring) for the quick report and early warning on earthquake intensity within Chongqing. The comprehensive average station spacing is 14 kilometers and the total amount of stations is 405, including 65 national projects and 340 local ones.

After the completion of the project, the functions of citywide (including towns and townships) quick report and earthquake warning will be achieved to improve the accuracy and speed of quick reporting on earthquake parameters. For example, in case of a perceptible earthquake in Chongqing, a quick report on its basic parameters can be provided in about 1 minute, and in case a 3 to 5 magnitude earthquake occurs, a swift report on earthquake intensity can be delivered to administrative areas at town and township levels in 2 to 5 minutes.

When appropriate, earthquake warning service will be provided for the public to have enough time to escape and activate emergency response, minimize the losses caused by earthquake, avoid secondary disasters caused by earthquake-stricken major projects such as pivotal projects and lifeline facilities to a certain degree, and assist the government to quickly carry out earthquake relief work.
