Chongqing- A discussion of global climate change was held online by iChongqing reporter Alex with climate expert Prof. Feng Yuming on August 26.

Chongqing, a megacity in Southwest China, made international headlines last week. The recent rains have finally ended this prolonged heat wave.

On August 11, the Ministry of Water Resources launched a drought prevention level IV emergency response in six provinces and cities, including Chongqing. Forecasts from the Chongqing Meteorological Observatory indicate the highest temperature reached 45°C. The drought affected water and electricity supplies.

In July 2022, the Yangtze River, which flows through Chongqing, experienced its most severe meteorological drought since 1961. A "reversed dry season" has been described as a rare occurrence. The forest fire danger level was exceptionally high in most areas of Chongqing, and spontaneous combustion caused by extremely high-temperature weather is an essential factor in mountain fires.

Prof. Feng Yuming is from the College of Environmental Science and Technology at the Ocean University of China (located in Qingdao since 2022). From 2012 to 2020, he worked at the Helmholtz Institute for Marine Science in Kiel, Germany. He focuses primarily on renewable energy and carbon footprint analysis in the industry.
