Chongqing- As a world heritage site, the Dazu Rock Carvings have always attracted tourists worldwide. Recently, iChongqing's special correspondent Alex, and Lara, a reporter from Hainan International Media Center, experienced this cultural treasure together. Their itinerary included Beishan Rock Carvings, Baodingshan Rock Carvings, and a special stone carving studio.

The Dazu Rock Carvings is a collection of sculptures and carvings located in Chongqing's Dazu District, about 150 kilometers from downtown Chongqing. The steep hillsides of the Dazu area are home to an extraordinary collection of carvings dating back to the 9th – 13th centuries. Highly regarded for their aesthetic quality, the diversity of the subjects they depict, and the light they have helped shed on the day-to-day life in China during this period, the Dazu Rock Carvings have provided tremendous insights and evidence of the harmonious coexistence of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism in ancient China.

The Baodingshan Rock Carvings is located approximately 12 kilometers northeast of Dazu District's urban area. It is the largest and most famous carving location in Dazu, surrounded by ancient temples, the Dazu Rock Carving Museum, and a shopping area. The most expressive and beautiful carvings can be found at the Baodingshan Rock Carvings in a U-shaped gorge with two groups of carvings from the 12th to the 13th centuries near a monastery.

The Beishan Rock Carvings is likely the second most famous location after Baodingshan. The statues at Beishan Rock Carvings were first carved around the time of the late Tang Dynasty and competed during the Song Dynasty. Unlike Baodingshan, where most of the carvings are along a long cliff face, most of the carvings are found in hive-like caves at Beishan Rock Carvings. There are nearly 10.000 sculptures on Beishan Rock Carvings, mainly carved by skilled secular carvers to show their devotion to Buddha. The carvings at Beishan Rock Carvings are famous for their exquisite craftsmanship, elegance and show the development and changes of the Chinese folk Buddhist beliefs.

Dazu District attaches great importance to the protection, inheritance, and development of Dazu Rock Carvings. The rock carving craftsman Liu Nengfeng introduced the inheritance history of stone carvings to Alex and Lara. Dazu rock carving art has been handed down from generation to generation for over 1,300 years. It has made significant contributions to the development of Chinese rock carving art, Chinese fine arts, and even global fine arts. It has become a unique souvenir, a valuable handicraft collection, and a premium gift among people and has been sold to more than 40 countries and regions such as the United States, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
