Chongqing- Chongqing has become an important strategic base for the development of western China, establishing clusters based on display, information technology and automotive industries, said John Zhang, Senior Vice President of Corning and President of Corning Display, at the 16th Annual Meeting of the Chongqing Mayor’s International Economic Advisory Council (CMIA).

As an important waterway transportation hub in western China, Chongqing has developed an integrated modern logistics network, creating the potential for higher output values in the transportation, warehousing and postal industries. 

Zhang hopes that Chongqing will gradually develop into a world-class economic center, industrial center and innovation center.

Great potential for development

Compared with similar city clusters at home and abroad, Zhang believes that the Chengdu-Chongqing city cluster has great potential for development.

With the economic volume and urbanization rate that is second to none in the western region, GDP growth rate that is higher than the national level in recent years, and population growth and consumption that are also nationally leading, Chengdu-Chongqing city cluster has the ability to become important growth pole and new growth engine that drive high-quality development across the country.

“Chengdu-Chongqing region has great advantages in unified planning, optimized layout, synergistic development and establishment of a sustainable industrial system," said Zhang.

He added that industrial clustering can be the direction of urban agglomeration development.

With the development of the Chengdu-Chongqing city cluster and the resulting industrial cluster development, the interactive development effect between the city cluster and the industrial cluster will be further brought into play, thus strengthening industrial clustering and resource integration and bringing new development opportunities for Chongqing enterprises.

Building an industry cluster by relying on advantageous characteristic industries, Chongqing enterprises can look for industrial opportunities with complementary advantages and reasonable division of labor, under the general direction of the automobile, electronic manufacturing and information industry.

Continuous investment in the Chongqing plant

As early as 2015, Corning Display Technologies reportedly invested in an 8.5-generation LCD glass production plant in Chongqing, with high business growth since it went into production in 2017.

On June 18, Corning Display Technologies announced additional investments to add hot-end process capability to the Chongqing plant, enabling full process production of display glass in Chongqing.

Furthermore, Corning again signed an investment agreement with the government of Liangjiang New Area on September 24.

In the future, Corning’s Chongqing plant will expand display glass hot-end process capabilities to achieve the first production of Corning Gorilla Glass in China.
