The 2019 Seventeenth Chinese National Round for Jessup International Law Moot Court kicked off recently. And the “Jessup Team” from Chongqing University, ranking the 5th in the preliminary contest, won the first prize. It also won the third prize of the “Best Memorial of Respondent”. Then, the team will enter the final international competition. On March 31 (EST), the members will represent Chinese university students to take part in the competition in the US. And the team will compete with other representatives from 139 well-known universities in over one hundred countries and regions.

The team heading for the US has five official members from Chongqing University Law School. And their tutors are David from Canada and Hou Xi. The competition content this year is in a wide range. They include the attributive principle for behaviors of non-international-law subjects, national responsibilities, and protection for endangered species and environment. It also focuses on protection for religious rights and cultural rights, and development, appropriation and common sharing of traditional knowledge.

Debating in English, participants also need profound knowledge of international law
Song Xiao’ou, enrolled in the law major in 2015, is the most senior member of the Jessup team. This competition has cheered her up. “Jessup International Law Moot Court is a competition about public international law. The participants need to use English in the submitted pleadings, court debate, and formal competition.” Song Xiao’ou gave a brief introduction. She added that the team members should have good English writing and spoken skills. They also need to know international law well. In addition, the anti-pressure ability is a must for all the qualified Jessup team members.
To avoid awkward silence on the site, the team reads hundreds of authoritative literature in English to strengthen the argument. In their daily exercises, the team members also attach high importance to vocabulary building. Sometimes even in communication, they will talk about everything in life in English. All the preparation is for instant reaction and well-organized language on site.
